In Hobbs, community is the solution

In Hobbs, community is the solution

It’s taken a while, but I finally finished the ninth volume in the Hobbs series. In The Vanishing Bridge, Bobbie Lantry is caring for an older woman who has Alzheimer’s. Across town, Rev. Susan Gedney is trying to earn back people’s trust after her humiliating exit from Hobbs. With the support of the women of Hobbs, Bobbie finds relief from her burdens, and Susan finally escapes her guilt and loneliness.

This book has been one of the hardest to write. The idea occurred to me last year when my wife was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. I’d cared for her during previous health threats. This time was different because we’re older, and her recovery required more hands-on management.

Being a caregiver for a family member is one of the most loving but overwhelming things anyone can do. Even a walk on the beach can seem impossible. When I finally asked for help, my friends told me they were happy I’d reached out. They listened to me share my struggles. They did regular buddy checks. They offered helpful suggestions for self-care.

This book shows there are many ways to express love, even some that are unconventional.

The Vanishing Bridge is on presale at Amazon.com. I think it’s one of my best, and I hope you’ll read it.
